14 Feb 2009: We are sorry to announce that this morning it became necessary to send Sparkles and Chaser to their final resting place.

Sparkles (23 Apr 1993 - 14 Feb 2009) had become frail, her hind legs didn't work well, trouble standing, frequently fell down the stairs, would walk in circles, and stand stairing at a wall, she had lost control of her bowels, and bladder and we had fitted her with a diaper, she was virtually blind, and very hard of hearing. She spent the last few months of her life as comfortable as we could make her, still she was ever the mother to her puppies, but at last, her time had run out and she will be better off waiting at the bridge for the rest of her family.

Chaser (5 Oct 1996 - 14 Feb 2009) In the past 2 weeks or so, Chaser had lost more the 25% of her body weight, looking thin as a rail, and her head shape was just bones. She had a large lump on her throat, her limp nodes were infected with the cancer that was just enveloping her body rapidly. She would walk to the water bowl, put her nose down, but then just walk away. When the Vet examined her this morning, he felt that she had only days, if not just hours to live and her body was shutting down rapidly. While still trying to please everyone, she was very likely in pain. In the past week or so, she had taken to laying in what for her were strange places, like the shower tile floor (usually too cold and hard for her). We really had no other choice but to let her go with her mother, Sparkles.
Pepper (5 Oct 1996 - ), Sparkles' son and Chaser's brother, has also lost a considerable amount a weight lately, so the vet is doing a blood panel, but he seems to be in reasonable shape for his 13 years.
You may recall that Pepper, Chaser and 6 other puppies were born in our bedroom 13 years ago, and Sparkles was the best mom they could have had. We have been a close family ever since. This it a very sad day for all of us. Chaser's condition snuck up on us very suddenly, making her loss today that more difficult. Our cat, Cammy, also is terminal with cancer and has large lumps on her hind side. The vet didn't expect her to last long, but right now she is still normal and energetic.
